i was just wondering if it is legal so to speake to belong to 2 different depts. in 2 different states any info would be greatly appreciated.

Technically I think it's a no-no. I remember seeing something in a FASNY magazine about it a couple years ago, and I think it fell under the same ruling as 2 depts in NY (I think they ran this through some state agency for an official opinion). I know for 2 depts in-state, the suggested remedy was to be a member of one dept and work with the second under a mutual aid agreement between the 2 chiefs. This might work for a second dept out of state.

I live on the border of North and South Carolina and half of the guys I work with are both volunteers and paid firemen in both states. There is no problem as far as the fire service is concerned. If you are paid in both states it makes for a bit of a retirement and tax nightmare, but people do it here all the time.Comment

I know of people that are members of departents in two different counties in the same state, so I don't know why it would be a problem to be a member in two different states. As long as you can meet the requirements of the two departments, there shouldn't be a problem.Comment
