City hires consultant to assess fire department
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The city of Lincoln will pay $30,000 a
month for a consulting firm to assess personnel and administrative
procedures of the Lincoln Fire and Rescue Department.
The announcement Friday from Mayor Coleen Seng came after an
inspection showed the city's new fire trucks don't meet the city's
specifications, despite fire officials' repeated assurances.
Talent Plus, a Lincoln human resources consultant, will examine
the department's management procedures and policies.
"Talent Plus has this expertise. We need this expertise," Seng
said during a news conference. "I believe Talent Plus can help the
    fire department."
Talent Plus will begin work on a six-month contract Monday.
Seng said the first order of business would be to identify the
best-qualified person to serve as interim fire chief, a position
that will be advertised by Sept. 1. Talent Plus will consult with
the city personnel department to interview finalists.
Rich Furasek has been interim chief of the department since
early July, when Fire Chief Mike Spadt resigned at Seng's request,
and Assistant Fire Chief John Huff was placed on paid
    administrative leave.
