HWoods, or anyone else who may have input,

What's the setup in PG for those who strictly want to do EMS? I'm an EMT-B with about 3 years experience, thinking about expanding my territory. I'm looking for a place that runs a decent amount of calls, preferrably some good traumas, and PG was the first to come to mind. I'm not FFI, and don't know if I'll be getting it any time in the near future. I'll be honest, I hate heights, and probably couldn't hack it as an FF. I'd rather stay out of that area of operations than do a half-@$$ed job of it.

Also, what's the general opinion about people who come from out of county to ride the ambo? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Most people I know wouldn't care if someone came from Mars as long as they got off the box. I'm figuring it'd be the same, but I don't want to come and step on anyone's toes. Thanks!

EMS.. Im a live in at pg station 34... our ambo runs over 3500 calls a year and we get alot of trauma.. we have ems only people who just want to ride the ambulance... if you would like more info email me at [email protected] and we could set up so you can come check out the station and do a ride along.... my name is matt by the way

First off matt what the heck were you thinking! We dont need any more squirels in this county! Second off what the heck is so good about EMS! If it was that good 33 would have an ambo... who knows maybe 2!

You should take your FFI. You will learn to get over fears, if not just tell your instructor. You should be familiar with a little bit of everything - fire, rescue, EMS, police, etc. Chillium-Adelphi is a good station to run with - some strange people, but over all a good company. Even their building was built with a watch room, like you read about. If ambo is ambulance, then we would use ambu, since the proper way to say it is with a long u sound.

I think that's interesting that there are two scanners to try and understand there at Chillium Adelphi at the same time. There is no fire whistle, so they don't know what a real fire scrin sounds like on a regular basis. It makes WWII movies and documentaries more important. They have their own headphones with a mike on them to talk to each other on the apparatus. Not to mention it takes two people to drive a ladder truck - tillers are cool.

It makes you appreciate small town, hill billy, back woods fire, rescue, ems, and police

Whats PG County's Carrer Program FireFighter/Paramedic? paramedic's a must right? even though you are just gonna ride fire, unless they force you too do ems...do thaey?

We have no such thing as a Career Firefighter in this county anymore. It is now called an "Emergency Response Technician."

Basic Requirements you ask?

Pulse, Breathing and able to score at least a 50% on the Entrance exam.

You sign a contract indicating you MUST become a Paramedic in 4 years on YOUR OWN TIME and YOUR OWN DIME. The County does not pay for it and does not give ERT's any incentive to take the course. If you can't get a shift swap for class...Oh well. That is unless you take the Course offered by the PG Community College (With a million pre-req's) and the FD Might detail you to class.

Force you to do EMS? LOL> Almost 80% of our calls are EMS there champ. You WILL NOT ride a Firetruck for at least a year unless you get stationed to either Station 10 or Station 28. And if you go to a station that has a good amount of active Volunteers, you will be on the Ambulace as well, because we hate the Ambo( well, most of us do)

In a nutshell, If you want to fight fires and not hand out band-aids, advance because you are a good firemen and not because you are a female or a minority, have a fully staffed crew and not have to deal with the BS of a combination system, go somewhere else. If you love controversy, disorganization, brown-nosing to get ahead and understaffed units, I think PGFEMS is hiring right now! Why not ask the Battalion Chief from your County (Aberdeen I think) where he rides 90% of the time when he is working.

Work with Your Community to Improve Your Dept.

It is a shame that our county fire departments don't have more funding, but there are a LOT of citizens in Prince George's County who are working to make it a better place to live. I created a web site about it at Prince Georgians Care . There's a lot of information yet to add there, but please visit and see if you can find information about your community. If you have meeting space available, you could offer your local civic association free space in return for making reports to them and appealing for support. That's what mine does.
