DERIDDER, La. (AP) - Authorities are trying to find out who set
fire to several spots in DeRidder Junior High School, filling the
gymnasium with smoke and torching a notebook and several files
around a teacher's desk.
Police did not say Tuesday whether they had identified a
suspect.
Only minor damage resulted from the fire on Monday, said Lt.
Kenny Pine of the DeRidder Police Department. He said it appears to
have been deliberately set sometime Monday before 6 a.m.
The fire was reported by a custodian who arrived at the school
and found four plastic outdoor trash cans had been set ablaze and
destroyed. When he opened the door to the gym area, he found it
full of smoke.
The fire had gone out but part of the building was still filled
with smoke when three units from the DeRidder Fire Department
arrived. Fire department spokesman Ken Harlow said the building
received very minor smoke damage.
Pine said the intruder gained entry to a room where in-school
suspension classes are held and tried to set two or three fires
there.
