Hi everybody,
Im new to this site and so far I like what I see (who doesnt if this career is their thing, right?).
I just got a p.o.c position at the local fire dept and I just passed my NREMT- Basic test so now I am wanting to go to a fire academy.
The closest one to me is the one in Elgin (that I know of) and I have heard that they dont do that many burns... I can get firefighter II classes at my station for free so the main reason for me wanting to go to an academy is to do the burns, and to get more hands on experience instead of book time.
I dont mind physical training since I know you have to be fit to be a good firefighter, so if the academy did pt, that would be good too.
Would you guys/ladies recommend me waiting to get a fulltime job at a fire dept so that they will pay for my training or would I be better off just paying for it. The chief told me that they wont pay for it. And if I can wait to get a job so I can save $2000 I will.
Thanks, Todd
