that's how I got my start in the fire service. The local volunteer dept. had a Jr. program where you had to be at least 16-20 years old and as long as you were in school you had to maintain a certain grade point average and you were not allowed to respond to calls after 10 on a school night. There were other rules too such as not making entries and driving the trucks but you had to attend all training classes for the jr dept along with training with the sr. dept since we were in a support role. they paid for all of my classes including the paramedic class. they have since changed the age limit to 18 to become a sr. but you are on probation until you reach 21.

My department in Divernon IL has a junior firefighter program similiar to the one listed above. If you send me an email with your address or your deparments address I would be more than happy to send you a packet that has all of the information on our program. It may take me a while to get them to you because I am currently attending Eastern Kentucky University in their Fire Program so I won't be home until Thanksgiving. Hopefully I will be able to relay them your information so they can get a packet to you.
