We were recently out putting mile markers up on the banks of the rivers in my county. Every fire department that has a water boundary in the county was out doing this, and every river in the county has been done. Has anyone else ever done this or heard of it?

No water boundaries here.
Is that some kind of hybrid version of snipe hunting?
Bank pole fishing?
Marking your spot how?
Can you elaborate a little, Mike?
This is absolutely intriguing.
Is this an 8-hour class?
Is this something we should be teaching a neighboring department with a history of jumping the call?
Get back to me, asap. I may have a place for this.

We had signs made and we put one about every quarter mile. The signs tell the distance from the Mississippi River. We have them coordinated with street addresses or landmarks. So when someone calls for a rescue or a stranded boat all they have to do is give dispacth the mile marker number and they can give us the exact location we need to go to.
Like I said it is like that on every river in the county. We just did it Saturday so we haven't used it yet, but I think it will work out well.Proud to be IACOJ Illinois Chapter--Deemed "Crustworthy" Jan, 2003
