    The Board of the Fire and Police Commission of the City of Mt. Vernon, Illinois is seeking applicants for the position of FIREFIGHTER to establish an eligibility list. Starting salary is approximately $48,000 per year (including holiday pay) with City benefits package. Information regarding the position, salary, benefits and testing date and time is included in the application packet.

    Prerequisites:
    • high school diploma or GED equivalent

    • between the ages of 21 and 35 years on date of test, or meet Illinois Public Act 97-0251 previous employment requirements

    • U.S. citizen

    • valid driver’s license

    Application packets may be picked up at the fire station located at 714 South 42nd
    the City's webpage click on Departments and then Fire Department, or downloaded from IAFF Local 738's website at the link below. If applicant resides outside Jefferson County, Illinois, the application packet may be mailed to the applicant by calling 618-242-6880 Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

    Completed applications must be returned to the fire station at 714 South 42nd Monday through Friday, or postmarked, by September 12, 2014.

    Physical agility and written testing will be held on September 20, 2014.
