DELRAY BEACH -- One of the city's top firefighters is heading west, to Abilene, Texas, to become a fire chief. R. Bradford Fitzer, who has been a firefighter, paramedic and administrator during his 20-year career with the Delray Beach Fire Department, was tapped by Abilene's city manager Friday and is expected to begin work Oct. 1, said Abilene City Manager Larry Gilley. Now division administration chief, Fitzer was named firefighter of the year in 1991 by the Exchange Club of Delray Beach. He developed Palm Beach County's mass casualty incident plan. A graduate of Palm Beach Atlantic College, he is finishing his master's degree in public administration at Nova Southeastern University.
