Destin firefighters to get ALS
Okaloosa County has agreed to let the Destin Fire Control District piggyback on its Emergency Medical Services license to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS) service.
County commissioners on Tuesday approved an agreement for the Destin department to provide the service. It has a similar agreement with the Fort Walton Beach Fire Department.
An ALS will allow Destin firefighters certified as paramedics to perform advanced first aid and administer drugs. Traditionally, those duties were reserved for EMS ambulance crews.
Fire Chief Tuffy Dixon said after the meeting that he hopes to implement ALS within a year.
The department has set aside $50,000 to buy needed equipment and $70,000 for training in next year’s budget, he said.
