LECANTO - Citrus County thought it had a new fire service director, but it turns out the search is still on.
Kurt Bozenhardt of Alabama, a former member of the fire department at the Kennedy Space Center, accepted the job two weeks ago.
But Thursday morning, he told county officials he would be taking another job overseas with a private organization.
The pay for this job was an offer the county could not match and "was in no position to counter," said the county's human resources director, Randy Petitt. Details on the new job offer were not available Thursday.
The top fire service post with the county offers an annual salary of $38,990.80 to $57,316.86, depending on the person's qualifications. There also is potential for an annual pay increase of up to 6 percent.
Bozenhardt expressed his regrets, Petitt said.
County officials now will take another look at the applicant pool. Petitt said, if necessary, they may advertise the position again.
The job had been advertised nationally and statewide in fire publications, on the Florida Fire Chiefs' Association Web site and in Florida newspapers.
Whoever takes the job will replace Mike Schlaudraff, who retired in June after 14 years with the county. Since early July, Fred Beckner, the fire training officer, has been serving as interim director.
