ST. PETE BEACH - A "benefit bash" to raise money for a local firefighter's cancer treatment is Sunday afternoon and evening at the old City Hall complex.

Dave Wolfangel, a lieutenant in the St. Pete Beach Fire Department, was diagnosed recently with brain stem cancer. The donations will help defray the costs for Wolfangel and his family to travel out of state to seek treatment from specialists.

"Anything that they need we want to be able to help with it," said St. Pete Beach fire Chief Fred Golliner. "If we can alleviate some concern about financial matters whatever they might be, I think that's very appropriate."

Wolfangel, 42, has been a firefighter and paramedic in St. Pete Beach for 10 years. He became a lieutenant in July 2002. He learned of the cancer last month.

"He's a dedicated firefighter and paramedic," said Lt. Lori Kordecki, who has known Wolfangel for nine years. "He's taught many paramedics. He's very well respected in the area."

The benefit will begin at noon Sunday in the city's Upham Room and gymnasium, both at the site of the former City Hall, 7701 Boca Ciega Drive. Music provided by local bands will continue through the afternoon and evening. People attending can participate in an auction of donated items, and refreshments will be available.

People can buy prize drawing tickets for $5 or five tickets for $20. Tickets can be purchased at the St. Pete Beach fire stations, at Ricky T's on Treasure Island and at 46 South Beach in St. Pete Beach. Winners need not be present to claim the prizes.

For information or to make a donation, call St. Pete Beach Fire Station No. 23 at 363-9206 or Stan or Lori Kordecki at 526-3807.
