Deputies, firefighters square off over barbecue pit

Who's got the tastier barbecue recipe — local firefighters or sheriff's deputies?
That question could be answered Saturday in the Challenge of Heroes BBQ Cook-Off and Family Fun Day at Abacoa Town Center in Jupiter.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser, which takes place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., will benefit the South Florida Blood Banks' building fund.
A 42,000-square-foot, $5 million headquarters under construction on Northlake Boulevard and MacArthur Boulevard in Palm Beach Gardens is slated to open in September, barring any bad weather, said Kristina Krueger, Blood Banks spokesperson.
The new building will replace the main processing and distribution facility, which is about 21,000 square feet or half the size of the new one, on 45th Street in West Palm Beach.
Palm Beach County firefighters and paramedics have set a goal of $100,000 and are challenging the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office to do the same, said District Fire Chief Jim Gribble.
"We're looking forward to a friendly competition," he said. "But more importantly, we are working together toward our shared mission of saving lives."
Firefighters and paramedics, along with their wives and family members, from Stations 16 and 19 are expected to attend.
"There probably will be at least 20," Gribble said.
The barbecue competition and judging (offstage) will be from 1-1:30 p.m., with the awards to be presented at 2:15 p.m.
Also planned during the day are a Radio Disney Kids vocal competition from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Live music from Tom Can't Stop (3-4:30 p.m.), the Michael Rose Orchestra (4:30-6) is also on the schedule.
A children's area will include a bounce house, rock climbing wall and sand art.
South Florida Blood Banks will accept nominations on an index card through Thursday for the My Dad's A Hero Competition. Cards, postmarked by Thursday, should sent to the main branch, 933 45th St., West Palm Beach, FL 33407.
Three finalists will be selected, and the winner will be drawn, at random, by WRMF's Jennifer Ross. The winning father will receive a Disney getaway and a $1,000 gift certificate from Raymond Lee Jewelers.
South Florida Blood Banks also will hold a blood drive at the event, using newly decorated firefighters' and Sheriff's Office bloodmobiles. Other demonstrations and displays include the Sheriff's mobile command, the Eagle helicopter, Sheriff's robot, an antique fire truck, fire sprinkler trailer and more.
Admission is free.
Food and beverage tickets called "Hero Bucks" can be purchased at any Blood Bank location, including Concourse Village, 75 E. Indiantown Road, Suite 505, Jupiter.
For each $10 Hero Buck purchased, the purchaser will be entered in a drawing to win a seven-day cruise courtesy of Holland American Cruise Line, $500 gift certificates from Raymond Lee Jewelers and other prizes.
