Rumor mill is back up. You all know how us firemen can be worse than high school girls when it comes to gossip. So I'll willingly oblige.

ISO was out and about recently, nobody is sure what they're coming back with but once again, Tower 15 talks are on the table.

"Someone who knows someone who knows...." well, you get it. "THEY" mentioned hearing from upstairs that about 29 new hires were needed by November. (More Truck 15 talk I believe)

Rural metro was gobbled up by AMR, (they didn't change the trucks, just had to switch where the "A" and "R" stickers on the side were and they were cool!!) Talk on the town is they want out of emergency transport. Come on, we all know it's where the money is!! :S

With all the AMR stuff going on, the city is considering a few things. One of those could be more rescues which would mean 6 more hires PER rescue (2 per shift x 3 dummy)...we have a bunch of new rescues just waiting to go in service. Who knows, maybe they replace old units, or become new companies. Time will tell...
The other options are scary and I won't even bring them up for now

There are all kinds of other things floating around out there. Rumors are just that, but I try and let you guys know when something out there has a little merit. Hopefully this will be the year for T15 and more rescues. Maybe even actual confirmation of a station or two getting rebuilt. The city itself is getting bigger and more populated. The FD has to grow to keep up service. You guys will get your shot, stay at it. Good luck to everyone out there trying to join up.

T11er seems correct... OFD recently had a meeting with the upper brass about department outlook just this week for the next 3-5 years. In all reality, the city will double in size over the next few years in landmass due to annexation and growth in the south end of the city: ultimately 3 new stations will have to be placed in service . I can almost guarantee the test will be in December, or possibly January though.

Sounds like it could be bad news for those expecting a test soon....Word is no test until January of 2019 now, not 2018...bummer

Any info on the current eligibility list being valid until the next test in 2019?

Regardless of when the next test is, its inevitable that we?re gonna have to hire. A new ?distric 5 tower? was approved along with the personnel to staff it. Thats at least 15 spots. Then theres all the recent retirements (time and medical) who we have to hire for. Hang in there. The more time before they announce a test is more time to MEMORIZE the Brady and IFSTA books!

District 5 tower est. 3rd quarter 2018. 12 new firefighters, plus filling the promoted positions. (3 new LTs and ENGs, so possibly another 6 FF spots)

New hazmat truck. Hazmat 1 was a single engineer that responds to incidents with other hazmat units. Now Hazmat will become a 4 man unit (LT, Eng and two FF) which will respond as RIT on fires, respond to extrications, and contribute to be the main hazmat response company. Basically a Hazmat/RIT/VMR unit. That truck will be back filled with current personnel who have the qualifications, then those vacancies can be filled with more new hire FFs. How many right now is a mystery.

Last but not least, the city will soon start hiring EMTs and Paramedics to work on non firefighter transport units. Basically, peak units to relieve some of the load from our rescue units. It?s possible this could transition to a ?vetting? position from which the FD hires certified candidates. But that?s all up in the air for now...

                      more to come eventually...

Will those hires be off the current list or is there talk of starting a new list in 2018?

There isn't going to be a "new list" in 2018, a new list would require a test, and that won't come until, as it stands now, January of 2019. As far as new hiring off of this current list, that's quite up in the air right now: budget for apparatus (tower 15) came from last years budget, and whether or not personnel budget comes from this years or last is up in the air. Also factor in the fact the chief has stated the EMS bureau would like to hire single cert paramedics, and well, lots up in the air right now.

This is pretty spot on. Although I was under the impression that the manpower for tower 15 was lumped together with the proposal to the city. I have heard now that Sutphen is trucking along (pun intended) and the dept wants to put Tower 15 in service by the end of summer. AND that the hiring will be off the current list, which will be extended to 3 years possibly. But thats all just words. Also all 3 shifts have been seeking out members who are interested in joining special teams in the event any come open. That leads a bunch of us to the idea that Tower 15 will be staffed by guys currently on towers or the heavy, and the vacancies they create will be back filled with new TRT firemen. Pretty logical thought process, so who knows if that's what happens... it might make TOO much sense.

Then theres the HazHeavy. It seems the higher ups can't decide if this is going to be a "REAL" heavy rescue, or just a 4 man hazmat that also does RIT and VMR/extrication. What we do know is that they're spec-ing a truck for a 4 man crew, and there'll have to be MORE HIRES to make up for the manpower that truck takes up. So either way, good news. THAT truck however is probably not slated until next year though, so hold on for the long haul.

                            More as it comes...

Thanks for all the info. Heard one rumor about hiring 12 soon and then another about hiring 15 in the fall both being off the current list. Wondered if anyone knew any truth to either of those?

I heard some people on the current list got calls for interviews last week or so, I did not get one and am on the list, just hear say from floaters from other stations. Not sure if it?s true or not.
