  • US VFD Member needs assistance in Calgary!

One of our county's volunteer FFs needs a place to stay while she's "stuck" in Canada with paperwork issues. Was wondering if any FH members can help her out or know someone who can? As you can imagine, it's not cheap when you have to unexpectedly stay longer on vacation. Please PM me if you have any ideas and I'll get the info to her. MANY THANKS!!! Here's the email I received from her Asst Chief...

    Fairfax County Volunteers,
This is an unusual request. One of my members went on vacation to
Calgary, Canada with some dear German friends under the belief from The
Dept of Homeland Security that all her visa requirements were in order.
Susanne's friends had to return to Germany on the 8th and she is now
stuck in a hotel in Calgary not knowing if this will take days, weeks or
months to resolve. If anyone has friends or relatives in Calgary that
can assist we at Co. 5 will be eternally grateful. Susanne is our
Secretary and we need her back! Thank you very much.

Subject: [co05] Anyone out there with Calgary connections?

    Ladies and Gentlemen,
I spoke with Susanne yesterday and she remains in
bureaucratic limbo in Calgary. The consulate has not
given Susanne any idea how long this will last.
Currently, she's staying in a hotel while her
paperwork is processed. Does anyone have friends or
relatives with whom she could stay? Susanne is pretty
small and won't take up much room! Let me know. . Thanks for your help.

I can't help out but I have posted a link to this post on the firehall.com site. There are a lot of other Calgarians that frequent the site.

See, I was right, Sky! I knew these guys would help you out. There are quite a few FH members in the Calgary area. Hope it all works out.

Unfortunately (not for me) I leave tomorrow for a much needed vacation so I am unable to help out myself. You could perhaps have her contact the Calgary FD or drop by one of the stations. If she contacts the PIO they could maybe help out.

              I PM'd Skyraider..

I'm pretty sure we can help. I just need to figure out a tactful way to break it to my wife.

I got an email from Susanne while I was in Mexico. She had indicated that she had found temporary accomodations and said she' like to meet to have a coffee when I got back from vacation if she was still in Calgary.

I replied to her email when I got back (last Monday) but haven't heard from her since. I assume that means she's either made it back to the grande ol' USA or she' incarcerated.

                      I hope all is well.

Well, Rook (and others)...I just called Susanne's Asst Chief since she hadn't responded to the last email I sent her about a week or two ago asking how she was doing. Evidently she got home just last week! Can you imagine?

Asst Chief mentioned that she was so grateful to everyone from FH who contacted her and offered her a place to stay. She's mentioned that to me in a few emails as well. She ended up staying, not w/ a FH member, but in a vacant home through a friends, friend...

She went out with a few from the local FD and enjoyed meeting everyone. Perhaps someone else from FH who met up with her can say more.

I hope to meet up w/ Susanne soon...she's German and I'm half German, so it will be nice to sprechen the Deutsch with someone nearby.

Thanks for asking, Bunker Lill! Come over to the pub & I'll buy you a drink.

I've wondered the same thing a few times.

I'm still confused as to the whole "visa" thing though, is Susanne not American? Why would she need a visa to visit Canada in the first place?

Respect...you hit the nail on the head...she's a German citizen on a Visa here (US) and was visiting w/ other German friends in Canada, but lives here. According to the Asst Deputy, DC Customs has a lottery in how they handle problem cases and Germans don't get many "tickets." So she had to wait a long time before her case was handled. I'll have to get more details from her when I meet her. It's wierd, huh?
