    False fireman arrested

Copyright 2002 Nationwide News Pty Limited

An American parole violator who claimed to be a New York city firefighter on stress leave in Canada, where he received a hero's welcome, was arrested by Canadian police.

LaCarte told people in Alberta that he was a seven-year firefighter in Manhattan and that 11 of his co-workers died when the World Trade Centre towers collapsed, fire platoon chief Charlie Brown said.

Brown said he came to the Lethbridge fire department headquarters on September 10 and "we received him as a hero and brother".

The firefighters showed him around, gave him a T-shirt and a cap, bought him dinner and the union gave him $ 110 for a treat at a restaurant.

"What can I say ... he got us good ... he swept us off our feet," said Brown.

Sept. 11 fireman exposed as a fake
Lethbridge woman's hero wanted in U.S.

          Deborah Tetley
Calgary Herald; With files from the Canadian Press

          Sunday, September 15, 2002

          Lethbridge Herald
Michael LaCarte, shown here with Wendy Gulyas, fooled many into thinking he was a New York firefighter traumatized by the Sept. 11 attacks.

It began as a heartwarming tale of an emotionally battered New York firefighter who found a reason to live after befriending a Lethbridge woman injured in a road crash.

It ended Friday in a twisted web of lies, deceit, parole violations and jail time.

U.S. officials have thrown cold water on Michael Carl LaCarte's story that he was on extended stress leave from the New York Fire Department to recover from losing fellow firefighters in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

LaCarte made national headlines last week when he told several news services of how his life had changed since the day he helped in the rescue and recovery effort.

He was racked with suicidal thoughts and in a severe depression, knowing he would never see 11 of his firefighter friends again. He snapped out of it, LaCarte said, when he comforted Wendy Gulyas after she was in an accident involving a drunk driver.

In turns out not only is LaCarte a wanted fugitive in the U.S., he was actually in an Oregon jail on Sept. 11, 2001.

LaCarte told Gulyas, her family, friends, Lethbridge firefighters and hundreds of others in Alberta and Montana that he was a seven-year veteran of Truck Co. 243, Rescue 3, in midtown Manhattan.

"He doesn't work for us and he never did," said Lieut. Thomas McCourt, deputy chief investigator of the New York City Fire Department Bureau of Investigations and Trials.

"He did at one time have a New York State driver's licence, but it was surrendered on his birthday in 1997."

McCourt said Truck Co. 243 doesn't exist, and although there is a Rescue 3 unit, it's in the Bronx, not mid-Manhattan.

John O'Connell, who escorted seven Calgary firefighters to ground zero in January and works at Rescue 3, did respond the day of the attacks. He said LaCarte has never worked at the station, nor was he a volunteer, as he also claimed.

O'Connell's heard a few stories of men passing themselves off as 9/11 heroes since the attacks.

"That is really low," he said Saturday.

"It makes us sick that these phonies are capitalizing on the backs of guys who got killed.

"We don't even consider ourselves heroes and some guy looking for sympathy from an injured woman is just sick."

The fake firefighter who passed himself off as a 9/11 hero is now in a Lethbridge jail. The 39-year-old drifter was arrested Friday on a parole violation for aggravated theft in Oregon.

LaCarte will be held until an extradition hearing next week.

LaCarte told Gulyas he was a New York firefighter when he helped her after the motorhome she was in was hit by a drunk driver in Montana in August. LaCarte was at the accident scene as part of Montana's Babb-St. Mary Volunteer Fire Department. He accompanied Gulyas in the ambulance to hospital.

Gulyas invited LaCarte to spend the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks with her family when she learned he would be alone, camping in a tent in Montana.

The mother of two young daughters said the day LaCarte was arrested was also supposed to be the day she made him godfather to her 10-year-old.

"Michael and Alisha had really bonded and he asked if he could be her godfather," she said Saturday. "We arranged for the pastor to come over and we were going to have a rededication ceremony that evening."

He stayed with Gulyas and her companion, Mark Wheeler, for five days before his arrest and he often walked or drove her daughter to school.

He showed her a journal he kept of his thoughts since the attacks, spoke in detail about his experiences and has several FDNY tattoos on his arms and legs. He even told an elaborate tale of his children thinking he'd died in the World Trade Center.

Gulyas said she cried for "hours and hours" when the police took LaCarte away, but she is trying to move on now.

"It's all so unbelievable," she said. "I have to deal with this in a healthy way and not be paranoid. It just got so twisted."

Although she was lied to and taken advantage of, Gulyas said she's not angry at LaCarte.

"I was smitten with him, as was everyone else," she said. "He might have suckered me in, but I have no anger or hatred for him. Maybe he needed to be caught, to be helped."

Lethbridge fire Chief Brian Cornforth was dismayed the man welcomed as a brother had pulled the wool over their eyes.

"We were had," Cornforth said. "We're sorry he took advantage of people, but it won't change what we do and how we welcome people into our facilities."

LaCarte insists he didn't deceive anyone. "I was a search and rescue volunteer (for New York City Fire Department)," LaCarte told the Lethbridge Herald as he was being taken into custody. "I have some stuff in Oregon. This is where I came to find my peace."

LaCarte "was definitely in custody when September 11 happened," said Malcolm McDonald, a parole officer in Oregon City. "I'd like to plaster this guy's photo everywhere so nobody would ever associate with him again."

LaCarte is not charged with any crime in Canada, but is detained under the Immigration Act, which allows officials to apprehend an individual wanted for alleged crimes in the United States.

While impersonating a police officer is a crime in Canada, impersonating a firefighter is not, unless it can be demonstrated the individual received financial gain under false pretenses.

            You're welcome drk.

It IS sick what this guy did. Sick what he did to the woman and her kids, sick what he did to the firefighters who welcomed him in Lethbridge and sick what he did to the memory of the brave firefighters lost. He's lower than pond scum in my humble opinion

This MUTT is still up to his old tricks. He ripped me off but good. He is now in Pennsylvania posing as an antiques dealer/former Marine/Former firefighter. I gave him a lot of antiques to sell. Needless to say I am still waiting for payment. I wish I would have found out this info before I got involved with him. Some people never change. If ANYONE has any info on him PLEASE post me back. I DO have a phone # & address for him if anyone's interested. C/O Mark Maminski MCCF

PS, I know of 2 other people he's conned in the last year using the same con of taking your antiques selling them & not paying for them. Seems its a civil crime & not a criminal one since I willing gave him the stuff & he didn't just take it. Perfect crime. If you want to have some fun with him call him at 570 801 0543. I am sure he would love to hear from the good people in Canada that he attempted to con. Or you could send him an email at [email protected]. He can run, but he can't hide.
