I wish that there would be something special down here, but I highly doubt there will be.
Even in the career departments, It's simply not important as there are very few remberences planned each year, and the only attendees for the ones that do have one are the personnel on duty. There are no attendees who are not on the clock and not required to be there.
It's really quite sad, and while it bothers me, I realize that there is in all liklihood little that can be done to change it. The firefighter LODDs that occurred on 911 simply do not seem important enough to take a few minutes to attend a remberance ceremony.Train to fight the fires you fight.

Thousands of men and women were murdered on that day, not only our brothers. It's up to you to you to make the change you wish to see.
It's just not my department as you simply do not see any fire department memorials around. the nieghboring city has one but the only attendees are some of the admin staff. One year it was on a Saturday and one member of the fire department came.
On a positive notes, the Boy Scouts organize a small service at a local cememtary every year and we do get 5-6 of our members for that as the honor guard, but it's almost impossible to motivate any kind of effort on an in-house level.
It's just frustrating. It may very well be a distance thing, and I may be overreacting, but it just bothers me that something so devestating to the fire service is seemingly so ignored.Last edited by LaFireEducator; 05-18-2011, 12:15 PM.Train to fight the fires you fight.

The weekend of Aug 22 in Mayfield NY there is a parade dedicated to the rememberance - if you check for the Bannertown Fair you should find info...there is supposed to be a rig from NYC coming up, motorcycle groups, etc etc etc....
As for 9/11 itself - there will be a ceremony in Albany, not sure of details yet....there are also some rides being organized to the actual site, I don't have any specifics on those though.

The smashed, mangled, partially burned rig from Ladder Co. 3 -- which lost 12 firefighters on 9/11/01 is scheduled to leave a JFK Airport hangar after nearly 10 years in storage and move into the 9/11 Memorial Museum this week. The truck will find a resting place in the cavernous, 120,000-square- foot museum 70 feet below ground, exhibited with Midtown's Engine 21 and an FDNY ambulance "to show the stories of first-responders," a memorial spokesman said.ALL GAVE SOME BUT SOME GAVE ALL

Several in my department have organized a 9/11 stair climb. Each one of the 343 participants are going to wear a picture with the name and assignment of one of the brothers that lost their lives on that day.
personally i am not going to be one of the attending the event. I am going to work a MET for one of the organizers of the event without asking for a shift in return. I personally am going to honor the 343 brothers that gave their lives for our country by getting on the rig and riding out the door.
city firehouses will display 343 US flags in front of the firehouses as it has been done over the past 10 years.
Flags WILL be flown at half mast as will as a moment of silence at 8:46AM EST. This is a presidential order.
