  • Assistance to injured fire chief

On August 15, 2016, Poca Community Volunteer Fire Department Chief Shawn West was critically injured by a falling tree while on a call. He spent 8 days in ICU, then, after a few days on the trauma unit, spent 2 weeks in medical rehab. He was discharged home on September 9, 2016. While he has made amazing recovery efforts in such a short period of time, he still has a long way to go. It is unknown at this time if there will be any long term disability.

Chief West lives in West Virginia with his wife and 2 children and was the sole breadwinner in the family. While the local churches have held fundraisers to help with household bills and expenses, there is still very little income. He is receiving a small amount each month from worker's compensation, but it isn't enough to cover the monthly bills. We have looked all over the internet to find some sort of grant or assistance to help this family for the next year and are unable to find anything.

Does anyone know of any way to assist this family?
