Honestly, I haven't read of a career firefighter being an arsonist. The volunteers have been in the papers often. I'm sure they exist everywhere, but are there that many more arsonists in the vols or are the entrance exams that good?

My usual posts on this subject are old and tired. I'll just ask one question.

How many of you would be willing to undergo an extensive psychological evaluation, criminal background check and polygraph examination before you became a fire fighter?

Simple answer--some arsonists join the fire department because they want to be heros. Kinda oxymoronic, eh?

Animals like this are not fit to be called humans much less firefighters! And as such should be treated as such! This pair not only put the general public in danger but the firefighters that thought they could trust this pair. That is what hurts those close to the case, ifyou place your life in the hands of some else then that is TOTAL trust and to have it thrown back in your face like this ........

Sorry, but to me there would be no 'rush' in setting a fire. One of the things I enjoy most about fighting fires is the challenge it presents. To me, I don't see a challenge in cowardly setting fire to someone's personal property!

I just don't get it, but I guess I'm not a Psychologist so I don't understand how people think and what they get off on!

Unfortunately this will be just one more black eye for us to deal with and overcome in our never ending, uphill PR battle! Good thing fires are down so we have more time to be Public Relations specialists!?!?!

Oh, and 1627 -- ditch the volunteer comment!! This is why "THE ARGUMENT" will go on forever. There are bad apples in every organization, corporations, mom and pop stores, vol. FD's and EMS and yes career depts!!! Unless career depts. are able to read the future during an interview and if that's the case, hey thanks for sharing with your brothers!

I wonder how much effort has been put into identifying what brings a "firefighter" to become a "firestarter?" I think the fact that we have done such a good job at preventing fires has caused some to lose the "adrenalin" rush they are used to having. Adrenalin can be addicting to some, so perhaps this is how they get their "rush" when the calls are down.

i feel that these and all other FF that have or would think of doing this are a disgrace to the title we all proudly hold.. whether paid or volunteer we are all here for the same reason to protect life and property and when you start risking it by setting your own just so you can see fire there is something seriously wrong!!!!!
    dont light them fight them

There are two things that really bother me about a situation like this.
    1. They put other firefighters lives on the line to fight a fire that they started.
    2. The public as a whole will use this as a reflection on all firefighters and fire departments not realizing that there will be a few bad apples no matter what you do. In no way I'm sticking up for them I'm just saying It's hard to tell what a person is capable of when they join especially in a volunteer department

I realize that with fire prevention and building codes and other measures fire numbers may be down a bit, but that is no excuse to go and make work for the glory hounds, There is no excuse, NO EXCUSE, to give the honest firefighters such a bad name by deliberately doing such a thing, I agree that these folks are not firefighters, they are criminals!!!
    stay safe!

Another tarnishing mark on the fire service

Yet again we all face a tarnishing mark on the fire service for two volunteer firefighters setting at least 14 fires over a year and a half time frame. One of them being a Lieutenant and the other a junior in the North Carolina Department. And worse is that their girlfriends appeard to have been present for most of the fires being set. What is going on in these people's heads? They think that it was simply to say that they were on location first. To put lives at risk and worse to jeopardize fellow firefighters. I just don't understand the thinking of some people today.
