I can't give you first-hand info, but I can give you some second-hand info on Spartan...

The career department in our county seat has a few engines built on Spartan chassis. These rigs run call volumes in the thousands per year, and have been in service for a few years. I know some of the guys who work on these rigs, and they are quite happy with them so far.

The only thing I know about HME is that the company is Hendrickson, with a new name. I know of volunteer companies that had problems with Hendrickson chassis, but I have no recent info for you.

Our department operates 4 Spartan chassis, they are a 87, 91, 95 & 99 with a 2001 on the way. There haven't been many problems with the rigs at all and they continue to provide quality service to the department.
As for the HME, I too have heard that there are major mechanical problems with the chassis, but thats just here say.

The 87 was built by Quality
The 91 was built by E-One
The 95 was built by Quality
The 99 was built by Saulsbury
The 2001 is being built by Saulsbury

We have operated a number of different cabs/manufacturers over the years, from Pierce and Seagrave to E-One and Sutphen and by far Spartan has the most room of any cab on the market. As for a 1 company manufacturer I totally agree with that, it minimizes the problems that can come up. When we were specking our new rescue truck, we took that into consideration. One of the reasons we went with Saulsbury was that they took on the responsibility of being the soul manufacturer of the rig.

Well the town were poster SMVFDE lives is very close to my town, And they will be taking delivery of an HME Engine, Now they had no choice, The engine was purcahsed by OES(Govenors Office of Emergency Services) here in California, The engine is part of a regional strike team program, Now I have seen an HME never been one I can say from what I know is they look kinda wierd, Now 2 city's out here have Tiller trucks that have Spartan cabs which are both pretty nice so I would say Spartan, Since I really don't have enough info for HME
