While my station does operate any type of aerial device, we do have a mutual aid dept that operates a 105' w/ pump.
When they first placed it in service, this was a major concern. Do they perform truck or engine co op's. There are a few areas that their ladder truck could be the first unit on scene and it was address quickly by the following;
They DO NOT PERFORM SUPPRESSION ACTIVITIES UNLESS;
1. There is an immediate life/ rescue situation that would require them to perform suppression activities.
2. The first in engine is delayed for whatever reason.
Within a week of this SOP, there was an incident where the ladder was first on scene of a working fire, w/o civilian life/ safety concerns, the ladder started their ops and the engine arrived 1 minute later and they started suppression activities and the entire operation was TEXTBOOK.
