ADDRESS to the NATION

Did anyone watch/listen to the ADDRESS to the NATION tonight on all the channels? I listened and/or watched most of the speech. I heard alot about Social Security, Farmers, Law Enforcement, Military/Defense, Tax Cuts, and the Trillion surplus when the deficit is paid off. But I did not hear anything about FD's or the Fire Act. Am I just selfish or does anyone else feel like they are being screwed? I know I voted for Bush, but it was the lesser of two evils.

The speech was for the President to drum up support for his budget proposals and tax cut, none of which am I opposed to. The FIRE Bill wasn't his proposal, and he didn't sign it into law. Personally I don't think Clinton's signature made it any better, but that's neither here nor there. My point is, just because he's making a speech doesn't mean he HAS to mention FF's or he's automatically no good. It was an economic speech. Relax.

National Review pointed out that the trend of long SOTU speeches continues. Their theory: that it just takes that long to mention as many "causes" as you can, to keep as many people happy as you can, which is in itself a lie, since all you're doing is casting lip service. What gets funded gets funded, and what doesn't, doesn't. At this point, no one really knows, since Congress has considerable say in the matter.

But a couple of things to keep in mind. First, Wash. hasn't cut ANY spending in more than 20 years. They don't want to start now. President Bush might, but Gephart and Daschle will try their hardest not to let him.

Second, the longer the economy goes in the tank, the less any of us are going to get, for anything, because of inflation, etc. Those tax cuts are CRITICAL. Let's hope they are generous, and retroactive!

And don't fall for the class warfare from the Demos. So what if my tax cut is more than your salary. I paid more tax than your Chief's salary! I also paid enough in property/corp. tax to buy your new ladder truck. I also might be your next employer for your 2nd job. Those tax cuts are important because every dollar in Wash., whether they spend it or not, is OUR money. If they don't need it, we should get it back.

Jeez, Bush didn't mention fire fighters...lets impeach him. Oh wait, we voted him President, not National Fire Chief. The less the Feds get involved in local politics the happier I'll be.

I want a tax cut. I paid 15k in federal taxes last year. Thats ridiculous. I'm paying all the living expenses of the welfare mother (18 y/o with 2 kids) that we took in to the ER for a stomach ache in our 911 Taxi last night. I'm tired of it.

Althea, enjoy Canda, please take Baldwin, Streisand, and Martin Sheen with you. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
