  • Memphis Fire is hiring.

This an "unofficial" from me to you.

The Memphis Fire Department is accepting application for fire recruits for the first time in 7 years!!

Here is a link to the official job posting for the position of Fire Recruit. It details job requirements and has salary / benefit information. Applications are being accepted through Feb 2nd, 2007. All completed packets must be submitted in person.

Information up front - All applicants going through this process will be required to become a licensed paramedic within 3 years. This will require employees to be rotated through an ambulance-riding schedule. Employees will not be riding strictly fire apparatus.

If you aspire to become a paramedic, this offers an excellent opportunity to be paid a good salary and work for a large, urban fire department while you attend paramedic school on your days off. Training will be offered in house at no cost to employees except for minimal state license fees.

If you are already a paramedic, there is a seperate listing with higher starting salaries.

I will be happy to try and answer any questions, but I may not have all the answers - I just work there. If I don't know, I will try to find out or pass along further contact information.

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

Yeah, but that means a trip by train, plane, or automobile to memphis from wisconsin. And that's pretty expensive on my measly wage.

                        Hmmmmmm..............

                        Hey Bob, Couple of Questions.........

Is this the First time for recruiting under the Requirements to become a Paramedic??

And, I thought the Maximum age thing was no longer legal under federal age discrimination laws....

(BTW, I'm not applying, my retirement is higher than your salary. )

                          Out of curiousity...

They're specifying FF-I certification within one year...
And FF-II certification within three years...

Are those actually seperate training programs, or do they go through a recruit school for both and HR is just wording it funny?

Just struck me as odd -- in CT, the state's "Recruit Firefighter" program covers both in one shot, and the larger cities that run their own programs don't care about being certified to FFI/II.

From what I've observed with friends over the years (I've never had a desire to go career), most firefighter hiring processes are very good at weeding out those with short attention spans or who get easily fustrated.

Matt45 - I am not sure about that. I imagine that is because of the paramedic requirement. I will send out an email and try to get an answer. You may want to contact the number for further information in the packet.

Chief Harve - I don't know how they got the age limit legally approved. This is the first time that they have hired for the position of "fire recruit" and required a paramedic certification as a condition of further employment as a firefighter. Several years ago, they would hire you and give the three years to get your EMT-P, but you strictly rode the ambulances.

Dal190 - You go through recruit school and get basically all the infomation you need for NFPA 1001-I&II but the wires seem to cross up a little between the city's and the state's requirements. The state allows the city to sign off of FFI certifications and then they come back and administer FFII practicals at a later date.
