Why would it be surprising if there were hoods made of kevlar? There are turnouts made of kevlar.

Our hoods are carbon fiber, and they suck.

No these hoods are 20% kevlar and 80% rayon. I was just as surprised as anyone else about the kevlar that's in part why this discussion came about.

Why would you say it is a slip of the tongue? Hoods are in fact made of Kevlar and Kevlar Blends, as well as Nomex, PBI, P84 Lenzing, and Carbon Fibers. I am sure there are others I didn;t mention.

We were trying to find out the fire retardant properties and thresholds also the heat transference of both. PBI is easy enough but kevlar is hard to find. a lot of "academic" papers on it that I can't wrap my head around. The kevlar holds up better through washings and wear. and the face hole does'nt stretch out as much.
You may want to just call, or place an email to DuPont, they make both of the fibers.

Seriously, I dont know for sure but would guess the kevalr hood is more resistant to tearing, ripping and such. I dont think it has anything to do with flame or heat.
Kevlar is just a tougher fiber...don't think there is much more to it than that.

started a topic PBI Vs. Kevlar hoods

    PBI Vs. Kevlar hoods

This may have come up before but I searched and could'nt find anything

What is the difference between the PBI and the Kevlar hoods
they have the same NFPA rating. both have 80 percent rayon.
any tech info would be great so I can win my bet.

    Thanks
