Ok, I have been a volunteer firefighter for 6 years prior to enlisting in the Navy. I have always had dreams of working fulltime for a FD, however I needed a job and wanted to serve my time for my country so I enlisted. I still have about 3 years on my enlistment but I am already looking at pay scales and the like for future reference. My question is how much of a role does prior military service play into the hiring for most FD's?

Generally you get 5 points added to the civil service exam for an honorable discharge. At least thats how it is in Texas. Not sure if years in would count towards the hours of college come departments require.FireFighter/EMT

NYC requires you to get the Expeditionary Medal. Basically serve during a time of war or in a forward area.Comment
