  • FDNY Hire after 9/11

This still may be a sensetive topic, but I respectfully request the help of FDNY guys, more specifically those guys who were hired after 9/11. I am doing a little research for a report on post 9/11 Fire Depts.

For those of you who were hired after 9/11:
What was the hiring process like? Anything different than a normal process? Were you rushed through training to fill in the gaps (I don't mean that disrespectfully)

What was the working environment like?

Do you think you were treated any better or worse than guys hired before 9/11? Was more/less expected from you.

Also, if you have any stories or any other info you want to share about growing up in post 9/11 FDNY (funny, sad, inspirational, dangerous, "so there i was", anything) please share.

thanks for the help, i'll post my report when it is complete.

You have a better chance of making ice cubes in hell. Why would anyone tell anyone anything? So they can use it against us, no thanks.

definately a little strange getting on in the aftermath of the trade center. wasnt really rushed through proby school. alot of raw emotions in the firehouse. we had some pretty big shoes to fill. personally i just kept my mouth shut, constantly went over the rig, and got in the sink.

was in the hiring process before 9/11 so i wouldn't know any difference from guys getting on now, but things are a little different now, heavy $$ in minority/female recruiting. just the way things are.

walked into the FH for the first time about 30 mins. after they found the body of one the brothers. i guess its safe to say nobody in the kitchen gave two ****s as to who i was. i dont blame them.

If you want to know that badly, take the test get on the job. Use your first hand account and share with the rest of us.

While your at it, stand at some persons funeral, and do a study of the widow's reactions. I'm sure it will go over "great"

Amateurs practice until they get it right; professionals practice until they cannot get it wrong. Which one are you?

'The fire went out and nobody got hurt' is a poor excuse for a fireground critique.

you want information but you delete peoples posts? I thought research is supposed to have all the info not just what you wanna hear. And I agree with the guys from the City on here, somethings are better off not said. Like they tell you when you first come in. What you see here, What you hear here, when you leave stays here.

            ??? I didn't delete any posts.

Kind of the response I expected, my intentions were not to upset anybody or stir up a hornet's nest. It is a research project for my Master's Degree (Fire Science) No big deal. Thanks guys.

I would do the paper on the knowledge lost from those senior guys I think that would be a better way to go about it.

Not in the FDNY or hiring process, but the one thing I noticed from down here that when I went to order an Operational Reference from the FireZone store they called to tell me they were back ordered because most of the recent printing was on the way to the new guys being hired.
