  • Weight room....got one?....you use it?

I'm brand new in our dept. Infact I get to go get my pager and key today. Our dept. has a weight room. I have a nice setup at home but the dept's stuff is nicer and more extensive. Anyway, I was wondering if many dept's have weight rooms and if many Firefighter's use them.

I fully intend to use our weight room to every extent possible.

We don't have a weight room however we get discounts at the gyms in town so for under $10 a month we get a full gym membership for a entire family!

yep, but I usually use the one at work.

If you don't know already, find out how to use the stuff so you don't mangle yourself.

I started in a gym when I was 13. I was on the weightlifting team for two years in High School. Form is by far the most important thing in lifting. Much more important than how much you can lift. I learned that after I got a 550 lbs dead lift my junior year weight 170lbs. I rolled my back and couldn't stand for 48 hours. My grandmother was furious.

I love weight lifting. I'm supposed to get my key to the firehouse today. If I do get then I'll be using the weight room this afternoon.

We've always had a room with weights in it, but we just recently replaced most of the old equipment. Now it really is more of a "Weight Room". I've been going pretty regularly since then, it is a lot more convenient to go to the station then to a commercial gym.

There is a pretty big difference between lifting "for sport" and doing so with a real-life purpose. Firefighting, for example, requires a lot more cardio ability and endurance then it does raw strength. That's going to change your workout a lot from what you'd do as part of the weightlifting team.

I did change my routine from stregth training to more cardio. I do more reps with less weight. I still strength train two times a week.

                Weight room? Yes.
Do I use it? Not often enough!

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

Our dept is trying to institute a PE program but is unwilling to pay for proper equipment. We have a hodge-podge of various stuff. My gym membership ain't that much and due to call volume it's hard to exercise at work. I'm sick of getting on the treadmill and 5 mins in get a call-can't get that time back. Or working shoulders real hard one time and we get a worker and I can barely tighten my pack cause my shoulders are dying. Some of our area Depts go "out of service" for P/E. Wish we could do the same.

I find this rather scary. Do they go out of service for other reasons? Dinner? Nap time?

Voyager: Kid you not, part of the perks of one area dept is a YMCA mebership and they do go OOS for exercise,

Of course I use the weight room. There is an extra TV in there!
I am a complacent liability to the fire service

They are not ""out of service" out of service. They have another company cover their alarm investigations, medical calls, etc,, but are still available for working fires and such.

We cover for companies when they are training, why not for PE?
