  • Major Explosion In Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley

Three people have died in the explosion in Milwaukee's Menomonee Valley this morning, which sparked a four-alarm fire.

The explosion happened at 8:07 a.m. Wednesday at the Falk Corp. near 30th and Canal in the Menomonee Valley.

Milwaukee police confirmed that a propane tank exploded.

The explosion could be heard and or felt from as far away as Port Washington to the north, Oak Creek to the south and Muskego to the west.

It was a four-alarm fire. One person is missing, and at least 25 people have been injured, according to the Milwaukee Fire Department.

There are now four people at Froedtert Hospital in serious condition. Columbia St. Mary's told 12 News that they have six patients with minor lacerations.

There was an interruption in power and telephone service to some businesses in the area.

Commuters are asked to avoid the area. Authorities have closed down the exit ramps from Interstate 94 at 27th and 35th streets, as well as Canal Street from 25th Street to Miller Park Way, 12 News' Matt Salemme reported from NewsChopper 12. 27th Street is also shut down from the Mitchell Park area to about Clybourn.

The Mitchell Park Domes have been evacuated. A senior health fair that was scheduled there today has been cancelled.

There was an explosion at Falk in 1978.

A hot line has been set up for family to get information. The number is 414-286-3616. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department says if you are concerned about family or friends who worked at Falk, you can also go to Friday's at Miller Park to get more information. Employees are being transported there by county buses.

    Reaction

"I'm troubled and saddened by this morning's tragic incident at the Falk Corporation, and my prayers and sympathies go out to the Falk employees and their families. This valued, historic corporation has deep Milwaukee roots, and the explosion has shaken people all over Milwaukee and has brought deep concern to Falk's customers across the nation and the world," Common Council President Willie L. Hines, Jr. said.

"On behalf of the entire Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, our thoughts and prayers are with the dozens of families affected by this morning’s explosion at Falk Corporation in the Menomonee Valley. We hope and pray for strength during this difficult time," Chairman of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors Lee Holloway said.
