WASHINGTON -- Residents of a downtown apartment building were driven from their apartments Tuesday night by a smokey fire that began in an underground parking garage.
Crews from the D.C. Fire and Emergency Services Department were called to the Clara Barton Apartments in Penn Quarter at about 10:30 p.m., but they failed to locate the source of an odor reported by residents.
Fire Department spokesman Alan Etter said firefighters were called back to the building in the 600 block of E Street, Northwest, at about 11:15 p.m. Firefighters found two cars burning one level below the street in the underground parking garage.
Although the fires were quickly extinguished, smoke that seeped into the residential floors of the building prompted the temporary evacuation of about 100 residents. Etter said the causes of the fires have not been determined.

I hate those "suspicious odours" calls, for exactly this reason. Most times it turns out to truly be nothing, but sometimes Mr Murphy pulls a wild card.

Just a thought: How many folks here would actually have thought about and would have "covered" the garage, just because?
