Okay, as an avid photog, I was wondering about how one would go about starting a photo unit? I know the FDNY has one. I work in a large city that does not have one, and the only way fires get covered by the news, is if there is a fatality. I know how happy I always am to see me in the paper, or something about my department. I'm just looking to freelance for the department/newsies. i know there are a few guys here that take this stuffon as well NDeMarse, any words of advice?

We have 4-9-2 and 4-9-3 (respectivaly the photo and video units of the CFD.) They run out of 107's house on the west side. Great units for disabled FF's. They respond to all second alarm haz-mats, extra alarm fires and incidents with fatalities.I am a complacent liability to the fire service

Are you looking to use paid, fulltime personnel?
If not, think about recruiting college/high school photo students, local camera buffs, significant others of the members who may have a camera eye, etc.
Develop guidelines as to how close they can get to the fire, safety, etc.Train to fight the fires you fight.
