The Sam Houston was originally released as an NFPA compliant leather helmet. It has, as you may know, an extra layer of impact protection and NFPA approved eye protection (at the time it was a faceshield....now of course there are goggles that meet the requirement). I have read that as long as the helmet originally met the criteria then it should be compiant under a grandfather clause meeting NFPA 1971 ..? edition as long as it has not been modified..ie substituting the faceshield for bourkes or whatever.
