Firefighter dies in the line of duty in Baltimore

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore City Fire Department has released
the name of the firefighter who died after battling a blaze this
    morning.
Forty-year-old Allen Roberts was a 19-year-old veteran of the
fire department and was assigned to Truck Company 26. He is
survived by a wife and four children, ranging in age from one to
    13.
Roberts died at Bayview Medical Center after he was injured in a
collapse during a two-alarm row home fire in the Greektown
neighborhood. The fire was reported about 2:30 a-m in the 500 block
    of South Macon Street.
Two other firefighters suffered minor burns in the collapse and
    were also taken to Bayview.
Two occupants of the home were injured when they jumped from the
second floor to escape the flames.
The three firefighters were trapped inside by the partial
collapse of the second floor. Fire department spokesman Chief Kevin
Cartwright says a rapid intervention team pulled them out within
    minutes.
The cause of the fire has not been determined.
Roberts is the first city firefighter to die in the line of duty
    since 1995.

                            RIP.

At 40 years old, our brother was on the job 19 years. I too am 40 years old this year, but I am currently new to the service (volunteer) after promising myself my whole life I would join the ranks. I am 1/4 way through Firefighter I class. We just covered RIT and completed the 'maze' and rapid egress practicals. This LODD has hit me fairly hard given where we are in class, now that I am looking at it from the 'inside' of the fire service. Our brother was on a team trying to rescue two trapped civilians when the collapse of the second floor occured. Allen Roberts is a hero that made the ultimate sacrifice. May he truly rest in peace.
