I think I am gonna have enough of a winter project clearing the snow around these parts. Maybe I will paint a few birdhouses or something.

To save this thread from being moved to the off duty topics, lets have some real discussion. What does everyone drill on, in regards to winter operations? Frozen hydrants, leaving lines open, etc....

Now is a good time of year to drag out the snow chains from last winter, hopefully someone was decent enough to hang them up and didn't just throw them in a bag or bucket to rust. With any luck, they might even have been rinsed off and sprayed down with WD40.
Make sure you have the right size/s and check them to make sure they are serviceable. Don't forget the tighteners. Go over how to install them with the new guys or anyone else who might have missed out on the pleasure!

A great project is to build some scale mock-ups for tabletop training. Our sister department has some high speed ones with simulated smoke and LED fire rooms that can be changed to practice size up.

On the grunt level- a few of us are developing some competitions inside our bays to train on practical physical skills. We have a Keiser sled on the floor that we will have sled relays and "tug of war". You can develop a few different drills with a dummy, or bundled hose raise, etc. If you ask a few military veterans about PT with a deck of cards, you can come up with some physically demanding, and job specific training that is fun.
