  • Little direction if you will...

I'm 19 years old, and I currently attend a community college in CA.

I currently am in an academy for a volunteer program in my city (Class 1), however I would like to transfer out of the city possibly to Southern, CA for school. I know Cal State LA has a 4 year fire science program, however I do not and will not attend it due to the location (bad location, and sketchy people). I was thinking of forgetting about getting a fire science degree and getting a nursing degree somewhere like CSU Long Beach or somewhere nice where I can be a college student, and also be on the verge to my choice as a career-paid FF.

Would this be a wise decision for me? I have a family member down south attending school and would like to be with her, and I definately feel it's time to get out of my city for a bit (maybe definitely), and experience what else is out there. I know Stockton has one of the best departments, but I am just so young and don't want to be here right now.

Can you please steer my in the right direction and critique my current plan (as it changes daily!)...

    Thanks for your time.

Sounds good, as long as you wouldn't mind falling back on Nursing if you didn't get put on the job. Good luck to you.

Bad parts of town and "sketchy" people is what makes our job so great! Doesn't USC have a studnt live in program?

        My suggestion.........

My suggestion would be to continue on with your Nursing Degree, get a job (really easy to do, especially in So. Cali) and then pursue your dreams of becoming a FF.
Once you are a Nurse you will be able to challenge the Paramedic Test; I highly suggest you do this. I have a colleague that did this and he doesn't regret going this route at all.
Remember, the Fire Service is very competetive and it is really nice to have a job and be able to pay your bills while your are testing.
My wife is a Nurse and she makes great money.........

Just thought I would give up my two cents...........
