  • Selectable Gallonage Nozzles or Automatic Nozzles?

    Volunteer department that I'm with is in the market for new nozzles. Question is....Which Type? I have my preference, but I'm looking to gather as much info as possible.

    Neither. Fixed gallonage. We use Akron break apart nozzles. 175gpm at 75psi. You can remove the tip and have a 7/8" smoothbore. Same operating pressure, little bit more flow. Forget the sales brochures...get them in house and a flow meter.

      We use selectable. It works for us.

        In this order:
        1. Anything but an automatic!
        2. smoothbore (fixed gallonage-cheapest-easiest maintainence)
        3. Vindicator (fixed gallonage-broken stream-not fog)
        4. fixed gallonage fog
        5. selectable gallonage
        6. back to number 1.

          I dont have a lot of "time-on" with fixed gallonage appliances, but the little I have, makes me prefer the selectables myself. I guess mainly that comes from the multi-purpose applications we did at my old station, being in a rural setting and all.

          Not 100% sure, but I think the Co here is all manual adjustable too.

            My preference is smoothbore, either 7/8's (160 gpm) or 15/16's (183gpm).

            BUT...my real world is low pressure single gallonage combination nozzles flowing 200 at 75 psi. We usually start out flowing about 160 at around 50 psi or so.

            The biggest problem with selectable gallonage nozzles is communication between the nozzle operator and the MPO. They both have to be on the same page or it simply doesn;t work right.

            The biggest problem with automatics is you can pump them all the water they can handle and most FF will gate them down to a level of comfort. This totally defeats the idea of being able to flow big water.

              We have both, I prefer selectable. The auto's are now spares. Buying a couple smooth bores to experiment with.

                we have selectable gallonage .......wish we would get some smoothbores........hated the Akron smoothboore/combo fog thingy ..........

                  Ditto...can't stand the things...We have one...it was put on our AFFF line...Soon was replaced with a TFT Dualfire...it is not our spare in the truck...

                    Ditto, except we have 100 psi automatics instead of adjustable gallonage...same issues with the marketing gimicks that FyredUp mentioned, they try to either gate them down or open the pattern wider to reduce the reaction.

                    Almost had the Chief convinced to get all smoothbores for the 2 1/2s and at least one out of the two 1 3/4 preconnects on our engines but I was shouted down by other officers who are still convinced that a fog stream is needed for "protection"

                      We got automatic nozzles and it works great for us. Just one less thing to remember to adjust or to go wrong at the worst possible time.

                          Ditto on the Akron Smoothbore/fog nozzle combo thing sucking.

                          Even with the pressure set for the proper flow, the weight of the nozzle often causing a kink in the hose and it just doesn't "feel" like your at the right flow and I often find myself calling for more pressure.

                          Additionally being a combo department getting everyone trained on the operation of the nozzle is impossible on the volunteer side, so there have been many instances and puzzled looks when they can't figure out why the nozzle won't shut off.

                            I like adjustable gallonage on 1 3/4 lines...however, if you are looking for simplicity you may want to choose fixed gallonage. For 2 1/2's, i like a smooth bore. Not a big fan of the mystery nozzle(automatic). I am a big fan of break apart nozzles and the breakaway/smoothbore seems like a good idea on paper, but I have no experience with it.

                              We have automatic fogs on all preconnects. However, we also have smoothbores on each engine that can be switched out easily if the crew so desires.
