  • 48-96 shifts

have any of you out there, worked or know someone who works a 48-96 schedule. what are the pro's and con's of this schedule? What has the effects on family life been (ie extended time away), day to day activities, interpersonal interaction, call volume issues etc. Sounds intresting but have some concerns. Thanks

I have a couple of EMS stations on 48/96. They love it. The homebodies love the 4 days off, and the overtime junkies love it so they can work extra and have a day or two off as well.

As far as the hours, if you march it out over the year you will find the 48/96 and the 24/48 work the same amount of hours per month, year, etc. So the time away from home is the same over the long run it is just that it is 2 days a shift.

My department is moving to the 48/96 in January. Most of the department is excited about it. I can't get real excited because of the time away in 48 hour shifts. I coach all three of my boys in football, wrestling, soccer, baseball and basketball so I'm going to have to wait and see how that affects things. Another thing is my wife has to deal with those same three boys for 48 hours alone.
My department covers about 1000 square miles of DOE land along with state highways and nuclear facilities. This requires all three of our stations to be inside a secured area so we don't have the ability to run to the store or anywhere else for that matter. We are stuck. I like the guys I work with but 48 hours with some of these guys under these conditions could be hell.
I'll let you know how it is working as we go.

                  This might help...

A lot of people dont understand the 48x96 schedule until they
see it on paper infront of them. Maybe this will help-

Hey Werju1....get a life. Always bustin balls.

In Memphis we only work 24 hour shifts but still get the benefit of 4 days off. Shift change is at 0700. We work every other day for 3 days, then get 4 off.

So for example. I work Mon, Wed, Fri then go back Wed, Fri, Sun, and so on.

3 shifts, same number of work days as decribed or 24/48.

I like it, still get 4 days without having to spend more than 24 at the station.

Management is making sure things are done right. Leadership is doing the right thing. The fire service needs alot more leaders and a lot less managers.

"Everyone goes home" is the mantra for the pussification of the modern, American fire service.

Comments made are my own. They do not represent the official position or opinion of the Fire Department or the City for which I am employed. In fact, they are normally exactly the opposite.

Phenix City is looking to go to 12 hour or according to our neandrathol City Manager 8 hour shifts. Currently working 24-48. Anybody know of any dept. working 8 hour shifts. What happens when half our people go to Columbus GA fire dept. and the rest of us get stuck working a full 24 after they take the beds out?
