I have watched this post with growing amusement. I believe Sgt. Dave should be hunted down and properly delt with.

This has got to be a bogus story, because if sgt dave saw this behavior and didn't suggest to the brothers to lighten up and appoligize to the woman, he's part of the problem. To come to this forum and slamm the Brave Fireman from Detroit makes my stomach churn.

These guys take in more work in a week than Sgt Dud sees in a decade. I can tell by his post. I spent a week with about 25 guys from DFD in Nevada at a weapons of mass destruction class run by Uncle Sam for the real men who will be "1st in" when the sh%$ hits the fan. I found each and every one of them to be first class firemen, and wouldn't mind crawling down a tight hallway with any one of them.

They like many big city firemen are dealing with a disentigrating city, an incompetent administration, and an increasingly ungrateful customer.

I like my friend in the District of Columbia, would be glad to raise a glass with anyone of you men. Keep in mind there are a lot of wanna-bes in a venue like this

    Stay low and stay safe........Jake

"Short of criminal behavior a fireman should always support his brothers", you say. Always? How about when they're publicly disgracing your department and your profession. It's one thing to "have each other's back" in a fire. It's quite another to make excuses for boorish, embarrasing and disrespectful behavior that shows firefighters in a bad light to the public. That should never be tolerated. The pride in our profession comes from the fact that we do hold ourselves to a higher standard, and that includes not standing for this kind of sh*t.
Oh, I see, so it is ok for us to do our laundry in public? I think not. What the hell gives you the right to get on here and publicly hang the involved firefighters? I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. When things like that happen, then it needs to be handled inhouse. Departments have policies and proceedures. Let them handle it. Don't bring any more bad light on the D.F.D. or the fire service in general.

If it were my mother, wife, ect....Honestly, No I wouldn't want their jobs! That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I don't impose my own personal morality on others. Irregardless if they are public servants or not.

Your comment that there should be no drinking in or OUT of uniform indicates to me that you think you can dictate how I run my life! This is the U.S.A. And at last I checked the 21st Amendment repealed the 18th!

I think FLAME5 you need to take a step back, slow down and read the others posts. None of us think what they did was smart but to take their jobs is ludicrous!

              Two cents from a fireman.

Flame5 is right about one thing. We would be ****ed if 4 drunken guys in uniform yelled rude comments to any of our family members. Even if they weren't in uniform, I would still be upset. But we have to stop, take in a deep breath and think for a minute. Is it worth it? Is it worth it to ruin someone else's life because they may have hurt someone's feelings. Not at all. What these men did was wrong and it shouldn't be tolerated. That's why DFD has some sort of disciplinary steps that they take in incidents such as this. In most fire organizations, termination is usually the last resort...as it should be here. We can't make life decisions based on emotion. If we did, our government, our fire departments, our households would be in shambles.

As for your belief that all firemen should be alcohol free--you are entitled to your opinion. But as a fireman that enjoys a few cold ones on my days off, I have to disagree with you. So long as I get to work on time, do my job well to the best of my ability, and am not under the influence on the job, I should be able to drink what I want off duty. Just because I am a fireman doesn't mean that I have to give up some of the world's pleasures while out of uniform.

                      Woodman,

I could be--but the chances of that are slim to none. We have 18 companies at my department. I have been called for shift overtime before. It's optional. One doesn't have to accept it. If someone is under the influence of alcohol, they decline the overtime. Just as with volunteers, if they have been drinking, they don't respond. I used to be a volunteer. And when I was drinking, my pager would be turned off. I also used to work for a department where we could be called back for emergency overtime. If we were under the influence, we told the dispatcher, and we didn't take the overtime.
I assume it's the same everywhere. If you're not being paid to be on call with a pager or set by the phone, you can drink on your time off. And if you get a call while under the influence, you decline the opportunity to go to duty.

                      ------------------
                      I LOVE THIS JOB!

                        NOW THE ALCOHOL THING....
I BELIEVE (OPINION AGAIN) THAT ALL FIRE SERVICE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE PHYSICALY/MENTALY FIT AT ALL TIMES HENCE MY OPINION ON THE USE(S) OF ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO, DRUGS AS WE ALL KNOW. IF YOU LIKE IT, IF YOU USE IT FINE. BUT I BELEVE ON LIVING BY EXAMPLE TO MY CO-WORKERS AND FAMILY AND THE PUBLIC. Flame,

Just a few questions for you. You have got the attention of 4 firemen from 3 major Departments with you opinions.

Have you ever been inside of a burning building?

Do you still wet the bed?

Do you gain sexual pleasure from sirens and flashing lights?

Are you an obese bastard that can only run with the big dogs on a keyboard?

I've got a pool at work and would appreciate an honest reply......Thank you.....Jake

Flame5, I hate to dis a fellow Texan, but if your "live by example" is "my way or the highway", you've got a lot of people skills to learn (startin'off with not insulting the rest of the fire service). As far as your views on alcohol/tobacco/drugs go,I would start using 'em 'cause your type A personallity is gonna be your downfall, brother.

Just my opinions, not my departments. If they are alike, it usually means somethin's gonna happen!

OK, here is my half a cent, since I am so poor I can't even afford to pay attention.

First of all Flame, when you get off your high horse, be careful, the fall will probably kill you.

As for firefighters being alcohol free. I noticed you are from Texas. Ever been to the Municipal Fire School at Texas A&M during the last week of July?

I have, for 11 years, with the last 3 as a Rescue Instructor. Come on down and tell the 3,000+ firemen down there for a lot of learning and a good time that they need to keep from the spirits.

And if you should survive that, maybe you can come out to the fire field and we will be glad to show you how the big boys do things and even let you play with our toys.

Secondly, I think the insults by the Detroit Firefighters were wrong, and the fact that they were very drunk while in uniform was wrong too.

Personnaly I think they should have used more restraint from getting snokered at a memorial service. They should have saved that for later and had a WGAS (Who Gives A Sh*t) party.

But right or wrong, they are my brother firefighters, and I can only give my opinion, guidance, love, and a sense of direction. It is up to them to do the rest.

                              Ed
