  • Memorial Protocols and when not to wear your Caps

We really never have faced this before and as we finally got our Class A uniforms, we of course have a few questions.

    1. We are having a brief memorial service for one of our FF. Not LODD but very sudden. We are having a brief memorial service during our Fireman's Ball and award ceremony. Does any one have a sample protocol that we could use or adopt?

    2. With the wearing of Caps, When do you not?
I understand Caps are removed during Meals and libations. In Places of Worship, Or Government Office. Unless you are part of the honor guard.
Does anyone have actual protocols for this.

As Usual all help and assistance is Greatly appreciated.

    Caps off

You are right. Caps come off inside a building unless in the honor guard. Goes back to he military that only when "under arms" do you where a hat inside. Outside, caps should be removed for prayers such as at a graveside service. That being said, it is also OK in an outdoor service to just touch the cap or lift it slightly during bad weather, etc. Be sure to brief everyone ahead of time on what procedures will be used so that the ceremony goes well.

The Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs has a manual on funerals that covers all types of cermonies. Sorry, I don't know their web site. It is a thick book and includes music, readings, etc. along with how to assist the family. I have a copy but can't let it go because one never knows.

I will try to check on availabily and post again.

    Stay safe,
