  • High School Research Paper

    Hey there!
For school I have to do a research paper and I picked the topic "Women in the fire service." I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I could find some information on that topic. Whether it be in books, newspapers, or websites, I can use just about anything. Also if anyone has any comments about the topic, it can be negative or positive, that would be a big help too!

You can email me at [email protected]!

    Thanks a bunch!!

You may want to check your local library, search the internet for the subject (especially this site), and also check with your local agency(s).

      Devon,

Go to www.usfa.fema.gov, go to the publications and then do a search for women in the fire service. There are a few free documents on that subject that they will mail to you.

Tough subject, may be a little tough to find information because it is a relatively new topic. The internet will most likely be your best resource!

If you really want to get the inside story, visit with a woman who serves in the fire service. Or better yet, talk to both of them.

Sorry...I don't mean to offend anyone. Just trying to point out that we still don't see many women in the fire service yet. Not that they aren't capable or welcome - in fact, there are a lot of fireground/EMS tasks that women can do better than men - they're just not showing up in large numbers yet. We have a female paramedic on our service. She's excellent at communicating with the patients and showing some empathy toward them. The guys tend to be more stand-offish, and less personal - less comforting. Just one example.

          Good luck with your paper!

Of 19 career line personnel on my department, two are women. A third works in more of an administrative position, but would probably be involved in the operations aspect of any larger incident.

I don't think it's "relatively new" -- I did a paper on it in high school back in 1991....

Anyway, www.wfsi.org is a good start.
