    Hello everyone,
just wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding fire groung communications for a training night. If so could you share them with me I'm in the process of putting one together for a training in December. If you do it would be helpful thanks training officer in michigan

Not sure what kind of training you are trying to accomplish- you could get ahold of some dispatch tapes and critique them.
Where are you at in MI send me an e-mail we can discuss a little further.

Also not exactly sure what your looking for. I'm guessing your talking about radio stuff. One thing you will find always messing with comprehension is yelling. It is not neccessary to scream into a microphone, even with an SCBA mask. Even if it is loud around you, yelling only makes you another background sound that makes no sense.

        Another big concept, very simple...

        1. Think
        2. Press Button
        3. Then and only then, speak
        4. Let go of the button, after you have stopped talking.

It's amazing how many people clip the front and tail of their message and nothing gets accomplished. This is especially important if you are using a vehicle repeater system.

3a. Identify unit you're calling first (get their attention)
3b. Identify yourself and/or location as appropriate
3c. Give the message you already thought of in step 1.
          4. Let go of the button, after you have stopped talking.

Bad habits die hard...even though I was "taught" the 3a/3b order above, I still have to conciously think about it each time I key up, otherwise I go in the backwards order that you hear a lot on the scanner in my area.

Well, teaching a different method of calling than the one your dept actually uses will only make things worse.

If you dept is using the "hey this is me calling you" (Engine 6 to command), you should NOT just out of the blue start using the "Hey you, this is me" method (Command, engine 6 calling / command from engine 6). This needs to be a set policy in your dept for concistancy. If every just talked however they wanted to, it would be a mess (more so than already)
