The Lairdsville story ending has yet to be written. But on this day, if nothing else, pause...take a moment and remember Bradley Golden.



You are not forgotten Brother....and never shall be!

We will not forget...and we will not rest until steps are taken to eliminate senseless tragedies like this one. A LODD death is bad enough, but it is worse when it results in gross negligence as in this case.

We will never forget Brad.

This is not just lip service. There are many firefighters (and members not involved in the fire service too) on these and other forums doing everything they can every day to prevent another Lairdsville: by writing articles, by participating in discussions, by posting said articles at their fire halls, by insisting their crews read about Lairdsville and by making sure their own live burns are safe. And by sharing their grief, their outrage and their knowledge with as many people as they can.

At 2000 hours EST on September 25th, 2001, Bradley Golden was pronounced dead from asphyxia due to smoke inhalation. Brad died from injuries sustained in a fire training exercise. He was a Lairdsville, New York firefighter. He left behind his mother, Carol Roberts, his father, Michael D. Golden, 2 brothers, a sister and many friends.
Though I never met the young lad, he has greatly impacted my life. He is our "little brother" and he is with me every day.
Rest in peace, Bradley Golden.

We will never forget. We will never forget Bradley, nor will we ever forget "Mr" Baird for his actions and contribution to this event. We will work to prevent such things happening again. Training and awareness are a must to that prevention.

You are in my thoughts and prayers regularly. I wish you well and am awaiting to see the end of this story. It has started with "Bradley's Law", and still has much to go, but the journey has commenced.

Good post. Art, I know this is close to your heart, you have done wonders to be an advocate for all of us and Brad. I too will remember what a tragic day this was for all firefighters. I also cannot think of a better way to make my 1000th post.

Bradley will always be in my thoughts and prayers. I know my life has been impacted by this young man that I never knew. A man who saw his future in serving and protecting his community. A man who saw the fire service as his dream. A man who had brothers, a sister, a mother, a father, many many friends, that will never be able to see him fullfill his dream. A man who put his trust in his "brothers" that they would be able to guide him and lead him on that day.
Bradley will live on in our hearts and our memories and "Bradley's Law" is just the beginning.
More than anyone else, his senseless death has been the motivating factor in my pursuit of my degree in Fire Science. I cannot just stand by and do nothing when I see yet another senseless tragic preventable LODD.

Rest in peace Bradley. May God bring peace to the Golden family.

The day has come and gone. Today was fire practice for the Department and it was a good one too. While the Chief and Training Officer were made aware of the Lairdsville Incident when it happend, tonights practice was not influenced by that in any way. However it is strange how events of the future can reflect the past.

Tonight we did search and rescue drills on an abandoned mobile home. Just a regular 1970 something single wide, with addition mobile. The place had been empty/abandoned for several months now, but the clutter that was left by the last occupants still "stands" (actually I was suprised some of it didn't walk out the door when we opened it. We also had very strict orders NOT TO OPEN the freezer. LOL)

During our instructional brief I had time to reflect on what I was about to do, and what ramifications it might have at some time in the future. I also had time to think of Bradley, and what his brief might have been like. It occured to me that under different circumstances, it might have been me being briefed to go look for a fellow firefighter who was missing. By the time Joe and I finished our run, we had found both hose dummy's and were able to extract the one from the back bedroom.

Even though it was "only a dummy" and a practice tool, in an odd way we brought Bradley home again. It is strange how one person can touch another even though they have never met and never has one spoken to another.

Of all the skills I have trained for both by the army and the fire service, SAR is the one that I hope I never have to use. I see the SAR teams for the military and Coast Guard go out almost daily, and I read the unit and case reports. For me, I know that if I am "going in" then something bad has happened to a good person and it will be up to my team to try to make it all "good again".

Bradley, you are remembered in more ways that anyone could ever have imagined.
