Smoke, sure I'll take the link for RegCleaner. Looks like something new to play with

Microsoft was very helpful. I only waited about 15 minutes on hold, and the technician I talked to was very thorough and once we got into the registry itself, he found the problem pretty quick.

No kidding, I'm surprised they even answered the phone. If you feel comfortable playing with your computer at all a little tool called RegCleaner could be useful in such situations. I'd like to think they won't occur, but I'm pretty surte they will. What do you think?

Smoke, I got hit with the Swen.A virus, the new version. Symantec put out the removal tool the day after my computer was infected. I followed their removal instructions which included disabling the System Restore (I run XP). After I thought it was completely removed, the registry wouldn't recognize me as the administrator so I could reactivate the System Restore, much less access anything else. So after finally admitting defeat I called Microsoft and they helped me locate and remove one infected file in the registry that the removal tool missed. It's been running fine ever since.

Swen is not a new virus, although this is a new version, its strange that Norton did not pick it up, you must have got it very early on.

If your registry is not yet repaired and your using XP, I know where you can get the default registry settings

    Pain in the Arse

I got hit with the Swen virus. It really messed up my system registry. My Norton didn't pick it up until it was too late. I update my Norton on a daily basis and still can't figure out how this got past it. I had to spend 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft to get it fixed.

Dal is right. If Microsoft has an update to put out, you'll find it at WindowsUpdate.com

    Here's the Symantec link:

P.S. This is probably not the best place to mention it, but if you want to learn more about your computer and how to protect it there are lots of great sites out there. One of the best is:

    NTFS

If you just have a question or feel to embarressed to ask on one of those sites use mine:Computer World

Its not really a public site, just one where I list a lot of links for guys in the job to download various freeware and utilities to help their computers run better,m but if I can help anyone I will.

1- Microsoft doesnt care enough about you to send you an E-Mail

2- Most of these are actually coming from the computers of people that are already infected and have you on their contact list

3- Try a program like Mailwasher and cut down on your frustration level

4- Make sure you keep Windows up to date , download and install ALL critical updates (just the critical updates and service patches, the rest are optional) either by enabling automatic updates, or by visiting the Windows update site and d/l manually. The site is:

    Well........

To make sure no one is sending emails from my list, the first entry on my address folder is [email protected] If I ever get a Returned Mail sent to that one, I'll know what's up......

When that stupid wave of viruses went around last month, I got over 200 BS e-mail in FOUR HOURS!!! Nothing infected my computer because I have constanty updated anti-virus and security software and a router filtering stuff. Nothing gets in or out without me knowing about. I swear, anyone who isn't running a basic and often FREE background and e-mail virus scanner should have their computer instantly explode, end of story.

I've done numerous virus scans...and nothing shows up. However, I've received some e-mails about un-deliverable mail...that I know I didn't send, so I suspect I've got a bugger in my system somewhere.

Good advice Dal....Don't open it! Hit that delete key.

This is the most annoying one in a long time. I've gotten hit (no exageration) over 100 times since Thursday...the first two days my Anti-virus software still wouldn't pick it up, fortunately I'm savvy enough not to open it. And I refuse to use Microsoft email software (Outlook, Outlook Express, Exchange) and not many people write viruses to auto-execute from Eudora or other non-Microsoft email readers.

Someone took a good amount of time writing it, has a plethora of options & menus that pop up.

You'll also see it manifest itself as returned or "undeliverable" emails with a different executable attached.

As a note, Microsoft ****DOES NOT**** *******EVER********* email out updates...if you ever get one, throw it out. They don't just for this purpose, so someone can't pretend to be them.
