  • Another dirty job for the FDNY

Musta been some firehouse chili in the pipes!

    ----------------------

September 5, 2003 -- A huge silo filled with treated human feces for use as fertilizer exploded early yesterday, sending an unpleasant wave of burnt fecal odor into the Hunts Point section of The Bronx.
Officials at the New York Organic Fertilizer Company said the silo, which held about 650 tons of dried fertilizer pellets, exploded at around 6:30 a.m. after a computer indicated one of the tanks was overheating.

Workers rushed to empty the silo, but pellet dust ignited inside the tank, causing what witnesses described as a huge explosion.

No one was injured, but the silo was substantially damaged, officials said.

"The odor is a nuisance, and until the cleanup process is complete, that will stay in the air," said company spokeswoman Lisa Alvarado, adding that there were no safety, environmental or health risks.

Residents in the mostly industrial neighborhood complained of an acrid, burning fertilizer smell.

"It was a really big blast," said Ben Weiss, who works at a produce market half a block away. "It was a loud explosion, and then the smell. I've never smelled that before."

Officials said the company contracts with the city to transform material from New York's waste-water treatment plants into dried pellets which are then sold to farmers as fertilizer. The company had eight silos

I'd say possibly even the MONTH Lou!! Ha! Good to see you guys are still hangin around here. I am a BIG Yankee fan from the days when I was a regular to the stadium back in the 1970s - Billy Martin; Munson; Mickey Rivers (zooom!; Catfish; Nettles; Pinella; Randolph and of course Jackson. I am following their results from afar - lets hope they can sweep the Red Sox and put this pennant in the box!

Harwich Hook and Ladder Dave, and all other of the "Fenway Faithful" Sado-Masochusettsists dudes out there. I was looking in the dictionary the other day, and saw the following entry. "September Swoon" Sep 'tem ber Swun n. The annual occurance of the professional baseball team located in Boston, Massachusetts, The Boston Red Sox, of the major American League. Usually occurs on or about the month of September, and involves the expected, dreaded plummet from at or near the top of the standings within their division into the proverbial toilet. Most famous example occurred in 1978, with a seemingly insurmountable lead of 14 1/2 games in the standings as late as July, whereupon they wholeheartedly and shamelessly collapsed, culminating with 4 of the saddest days in Red Sox Nation's history, forever known as "The Boston Massacre." See the website "RedSoxsuck.com" for more information. Boys, take it easy, we still got a whole lot of September baseball left to play. 'Nuff said.
