From what I have heard, the term pilot- is not used as a title; but rather the pilots of the FDNY must hold a USCG pilots liscence for all waters of the New York Bay, for a vessel at least 500 tons displacement.

I distinctly remember the comments made over the air, by one of the FDNY marine units as the events unfolded in lower Manhattan. One can only imagine the shock and horror....as they watched the second plane approach and slam into the building.

Yes they are Licensed. Dont know much about it. But they are certified or licesed by the Coast Gaurd, Etc. and are also FDNY Firemen who took a test to be "promoted" to the rank
