Here is a picture I just found from the blackout a few weeks ago. Pretty interesting!

I'd be more interested in seeing a real photo of the blackout instead of this fake. Someone obviously tinkered with this in Paintshop. The blackout area is dark black where the rest of the pic is a blueish tint. The blackout area of New York should resemble Northern Canada parts of the photo but the New York area is too dark.

If the time stamped on that picture is correct, it's an obvious fake. Much of New York State had power back on at that time. New York City was one of the last area to be restored.

I also find it interesting there is not a single cloud over the entire USA when the photo was taken!

This "satellite image" purported to be a photo of the recent northeastern U.S. blackout is making its way around the Internet by e-mail. The Web site Urban Legends and Folklore already has listed it as bogus! There is no imaging satellite named "GeoStar." The timestamp is in EST, but satellite images are marked UT (universal time). The blackout portion is too far south and not far enough west.

Here are links along with two photos from NOAA from REAL satellite images before and after the blackout.

Night Lights satellite image about 20hrs before blackout 8-13-03.

          Cities marked for viewing

          No Cities marked

Night Lights satellite image about 7hrs after blackout.

          Cities marked for viewing

          No Cities marked

You guys have just demonstrated my point about how hard it is for an amatuer to pass a manipulated digital photo off as legit. The first question you have to ask is "Does the photo make sense?"

              sconfire,
Thanks for posting the REAL pics. Like I said in my original post, I am much more interested in authentic photos than the obvious fake making the rounds.

If it is a fake then they duped the people at the Providence Journal. That photo was in there a few days ago. So either that photo is real or they have no one checking facts. Considering that they have a circulation of more than 150,000 every day, I find it very hard to believe.

The photo is VERY fake. If you look at the satellite images from NOAA you can see the light dispacement throughout the area is completely different. In the FAKE photo you can also see where Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto and Ottowa still have lights... hmmmm

One thing is for sure... I do not think this is the first or the last time that a "newspaper" will be duped by mis-information or... god forbid... print the wrong information.

Just look at the images from a reputable website and then look where this one came from.

The emailed photo is, in fact, a cropped, doctored version of a well-known composite image created from satellite photos taken between 1994 and 1995 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program.

                      Here is the original photo

                      Here is the doctored photo

The proof is clear... fake... fake... fake... fake!

And here's what a quick gamma adjustment of the original reveals:

Thanks Lt. I had actually done one of those as well but I figured I would show the real thing. It was obvious with the color difference that it was manipulated. Either that or it was a REEEEAAALLLL dark blackout!

The PJB publish something not 100% true? Say it isn't so!

I seem to recall that fairly recently a major paper (Times or Post) atributed a quote to Haywood Jablome and three days later had to post an appology for being duped.
