An off duty Augusta-Richmond County (Ga) Firefighter was killed in a 3 vehicle MVA in Aiken SC on 08-20-03.
Tuesday's wreck happened at about 7 p.m. when a Chevrolet pickup traveling north toward Aiken blew a tire, crossed the grassy median and hit Mr. Johnson's late-model Dodge Stratus head-on, Aiken County Chief Deputy Coroner Tim Carlton said.
The Stratus burst into flames, and a Dodge pickup traveling south toward Augusta landed on top of the burning car, Mr. Carlton said.
Mr. Johnson died from burns, Mr. Carlton said.
The driver of the pickup that crossed the highway was Thomas B. Hawkins, 29, of North Augusta, said South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Tony Bell. James B. Turner, 40, also of North Augusta, was a passenger in the vehicle.
Cpl. Bell said the accident is still under investigation.
The news report is slightly wrong the chevy did blow a tire but it hit the dodge head on pushing it into Mr. Johnsons vehicle, and pinning his car in a ditch beneath the dodge pickup. On a side not the dodge pickup was diven by a 15 y/o student driver whos passenger was his driving instructor. I have a feeling it will be extremly rough for him in the future.
