The handcuff knot is a clove hitch with the loops that would normally go around an object pulled through each other.

Just graduated the fire academy and have used the clove hitch many many times but they never showed us the Handcuff knot....what is its function?

The handcuff knot is basically used as a rescue knot. Not comfortable but it'll work in a pinch. There are other uses but I won't go there

It has many uses but the most common is in RIT (or FAST) operations. It's tied around the down firefighter's arms or legs and used to hoist or pull him/her out of holes in the floor, up a staircase, etc.

Go to www.rapidintervention.com and search their forums for the Columbus or Nance drill for more info.

B!tch H!tch, though I absolutely love that. Just for all you aspiring bondage maniacs, it works alot better to use 3/4 inch webbing for that purpose. It doesn't chafe as much

It can also be used for patient restraint.

FDNY calls this the California Love Knot. We are taught this in probie school. We drill on this knot very often. It is important to know this knot because it could save the life of a firefighter or civilian.
