HELENA - A 49-year-old firefighter from Massachusetts was found dead in his tent Friday morning at the Boles Meadow Fire camp just north of Potomac, Missoula County Sheriff Mike McKeekin said.
While lawmen from Missoula County are still investigating his death, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Natural Resources and Conservation said he apparently died of natural causes.
"He didn't wake up (Friday) morning and his camp mates went in to find out why," Michelle Smith said from her Missoula DNRC post.
Early indicators point to a heart attack, Smith added. The name of the dead man is being withheld pending notification of his family.
The Boles Meadow Fire is part of the Boles/Rattlesnake complex of fires burning 15-20 miles northeast of Missoula. An estimated 12,800 acres are burning and fire officials say the blaze is 10 percent contained.
A Type II incident management team led by Chris Hoff is managing the fires and the state DNRC is responsible for fire protection in the Boles Meadow Fire area. The deceased firefighter was hired on as a contract firefighter with the management team, Smith said.
