  • I applied for FFI/EMT for Gwinnett County in Georgia

    Woo Hoo:

GCFD finally opened up for Entry FF/EMT positions. I've been waiting to apply for about 4 months. Now just have to wait and see what develops. I have to take some FF entry test. Not sure how it goes, but I passed the Entry Law Enforcement Officer test. I'm wondering if the Fire Fighter test will be like that one.

Any of you guys here work in Gwinnett? If so can you tell me how you like it. Which station do you guys work out of? Hopefully I'll be hired and working by the end of this year.

    Take care and be safe.

    GOOD LUCK

As you can see in my siG, I am a Fierengineer (Driver) at Station 15-B in Lawrenceville. My dad lives in Lilburn and is a Driver/ Fire instructor at the Fire Academy (you'll see him soon enough), and my uncle is a Lt. at Station 14-B in Buford.

As far as the written test: It is (or was) a standard civil service test/ reading comprehension. It is pretty easy. The Physical agility is not too bad (if it;s still the same). DON'T get in a hurry. Walk briskly.

Start running. There is a ton of it in recruit school.

Any more questions e-mail me at [email protected]

        Hey Scooby:

Where are you? LOL. Do you work at the big firehouse over off of
Cruse road? I go by there everyday going to Gwinnett Tech. I saw on Monday there was a wreck right there in the drive. Thanks for the information. Your dad is an instructor huh? Wow that's so weird to have you to ask questions to. To get prepared for the journey that's
ahead, anything besides running that I need to start doing? This is of course considering they even choose me.

What are some of the main calls you guys get in Gwinnett? I'm guessing auto accidents? Take care and thanks for the info.

That is station 20 that is at Cruse and Sugarloaf. I work at the station in downtown Lawrenceville at Luckie and Perry St. We run anything and everything...you name it. I am a paramedic also and ride the rescue (ambulance) a good bit. Made driver in April.

As far as getting ready. There are a lot of pushups and sit-ups. Work on cardiovascular and upper body strength. As long as you do well on the written and you have a clean background...you'll be a Gwinnett frefighter soon.

          GOOD LUCK

Ok. The one across the street from Autozone. I know exactly where that one is. I have a clean background with no arrests, or no drug problems. I got a through search when I applied for my weapons permit last year. I know I'm clean. If the test is like the one for the Gwinnett Police I did well on it. Hopefully the written test is similar to that for the Fire Department.

I do backpack quite a bit so hopefully that will help in the cardio
area. I'm going to start the weight training again this week. Again thanks for the info. Where is the academy? I know some of it is taught at Gwinnett Tech. I know the instructor there that teached the fire science classes pretty well.

Take care and be safe. Maybe our paths will cross if I get on with GCFD someday.

The FA is on Hwy 124 about a mile north of Hamilton Mill Rd. It is behind Station 18. All the recruit school is done at the FA. After school the fire science courses are at Gwinnett Tech and FA. Also, I believe they have started doing some EMT school at Gwinnett Tech instead of the FA.

              Good luck

                BTW:

If you'd like to listen to what we do go to www.scangwinnett.com . Click on fire/ems and you can listen to radio traffic. It scans it so one transmission might be dispatch, then tac 2 then a fireground tac channel.

                  Hey Scobby:

I got a letter from GC about the test. I suppose I passed the background test. Got to take the written test on Sept. 13th. One day before I leave for Colorado. Man I was hoping the test wouldn't be on the days I was gone hiking. You been busy there at the fire station?
Is the written test hard? What sort of things should I need to know for that test? Any sort of study material?

Well, be safe and take care.

Written test is a civil service test. Has a lot of stuff like this wheel turns this, way which way does this wheel turn. Also, has a section where they read you a paragraph or so, then you answer questions based on what you can remember. BUT, all this was what was on mine about 8 or 9 years ago. Good chance it could have changed.

We have been pretty steady. Been having several fires in the last week or so.

As for the background test...you havent seen nothing yet. After the written you get about a 50 page packet that you have to fill out for every job you have ever had, many references, etc.

                    GOOD LUCK.

                      Hey Scooby:

Thanks for the info. I remember back when I took the entry level Police test. There were a few of the scenario questions, following directions on a map, and who does what. I passed the test and went to the orientation. The amount of paperwork was rediculious. I decided to not become a policeman. It sounds like the same sort of test for the GCFD.

                      Thanks again for your help.

                      Take care,

Ahh, Captain Bob. I've heard about him and have visited his site. If I pass the written test I'll get his package and start studying. Thanks for the info CALFFBOU.

                            Why wait?

Why limit yourself to just one department and hold
off on making yourself marketable? You should start
applying other places and polishing your interview
                            skills right now....

Well took and passed the written test yesterday 9-13-03. Had to fill out a mountain of paper work. Now they are conducting the background checks for everyone. There were 50 people that took the test, but on 20 that passed. Now just waiting on my paper that tells me to call for the PPE test. Getting a bit nervous at this point.
