Smoking in Stations

Just a question for all: With the New York State Clean Indoor Air Act in place it bans smoking in all public places (including Firehouses) and our department is having trouble getting people to stop smoking inside the sations. I was curious has any of your departments taken any steps to prevent smoking in your station??

With the few individuals that still smoke on the department...they are outside standing around the ashtray. Even when it is 30 below zero.

I was curious about this we have discussed it and nobody really knew if it covered the truck room. Just for knowledge, the truck rooms, storgae rooms, meeting rooms and offices at our hall are PRIVATE and are never open to the public. But we have the bingo hall connected so my interpretation of the law is that its all over everywhere in the building regardless of the operations rooms being private. Let me know if anybody knows for sure before I bring it up.

New Smoking Law Now In Effect
On July 24, 2003, a new law was put into effect in New York state that expands the “Clean Air Act." It does, in effect, ban all smoking in restaurants, bars, and bowling alleys, as well as most public indoor locations and work areas. The next question is, how does the law impact the fire and EMS volunteers of New York state? For those departments and squads that fall under the general groups above (and several others), the law is very clear. We are covered. If you read the law, as well as the information provided by the New York State Department of Health, you may see that “membership associations” are, in some cases, exempt from the law. This is not the case for fire departments and ambulance squads in that there is a clear employee-employer relationship. That relationship is established by inclusion in OSHA (PESH in New York state) coverage, as well as VFBL and VABL. Penalties are set at a maximum of $1,000.00 if your county has its own health department or $2,000.00 if you fall under NYSDOH oversight. Further information may be obtained from the New York State Department of Health, your county health department, or from NYSAFC.

SMOKING STILL CONTINUES IN THE TRUCK BAY AREA AS USUAL. NOBODY HAS PRESSED THE ISSUE AS OF YET. WHEN SOMEBODY DOES IT WILL BE A CLOSED ISSUE; STEP OUTSIDE BOYS AND GIRLS.

Utah is a clean air state. In our firehouses (My paid job and volunteer job) there is no smoking. Some people get away with it in the bays, but nothing in the living or training areas. If you're going to smoke, you MUST go outside.
Something that ****es me off with smokers is always finding cigarette butts thrown all over the place!

BUTTS, BUTTS EVERYWHERE

With the new law in effect here, the politicians are bitching about the amount of butts on the sidewalks and in the gutters. God forbid they buy butt cans for the sidewalsk, people might just use them!!!!!!
